For the Heritage Days this year we have a brand new exhibition -about the Pryor family who lived in Hylands House from 1858 to 1904. We have some wonderful photographs from the late 1800s. Find out who was in the House at each census; where the servants came from, and why some of the grandchildren were there. Do you know which lady who became very well-known was once a governess for three of the grandchildren in the House? -
8th, 9th & 10th August 2017 (10am - 4pm)Hylands in WW1If you missed this exhibition the last time round, we are once again displaying pictures and stories of ‘Hylands in World War 1’. You’ll be able to read the stories of some of the 1,500 soldiers who were patients in Hylands Military Hospital. We even have some actual Belgian records for the Belgian soldiers. There are also the stories of the Voluntary Aid Detachments – mostly well bought up young ladies from the area who ‘helped’ with the nursing. Sir Daniel and Lady Gooch financed the hospital and Sir Daniel even made some of the bedside cabinets. They also equipped the hospital with an operating theatre and an X-ray machine!
